Q: I called in a DigAlert yesterday and I have not recieved my information in my email.
A: First check to make sure that your mail is not getting caught in a spam filter. Secondly you should white-list noreply@digalert.org. Lastly, next time you call in a ticket, check with a csr to make sure we have your correct email address.
Q: Is Caltrans a member of DigAlert?
A: Per California government Code 4216.1 The California Department of Transportation is not required to be a member of a regional notification center.
Q: Will the locator be able to tell me the depth of the utility lines?
A: The locator will only be able to mark the approximate location of the underground facility, not the depth.
Q: Why did the utility company not mark the lines in front of my house?
A: The utility company is only required to mark lines that they own or maintain and will more than likely only mark up to private line/meter.
Q: Why don't they mark on private property?
A: Some utilities do. However, the Government Code only requires them to mark the lines they own and/or maintain.
Q: Who is responsible for removing the markings?
A: It is preferred that the excavator remove any marks due to the fact that they are the only ones who know when job is completed.
Q: What is vacuum excavating?
A: Vacuum excavating is excavation by using a vacuum to move any type of earth instead of using a shovel, backhoe, or any other type of excavation equipment.
Q: How much is this service?
A: Our services are paid for by the utility companies making it free for our callers.
Q: Do I need a Digalert if I'm only digging a few inches deep?
A: Yes. Anytime you move earth you must have a DigAlert.
Q: Why do I have to start my digging within 14 days to get a ticket number?
A: DigAlert is setup to only handle planed excavation; we do not handle pre-planning jobs or design stage tickets.
Q: I marked in a different color to show where I'm working. Is that ok?
A: Generally it is advised to mark in white due to the fact that any other color could be mistaken for marked utility lines. If that is not possible, let the CSR know at the time of your call what color you have delineated in so it can be passed on to the members.
Q: Why do we have to have separate tickets for sub contractors?
A: Each DigAlert ticket covers a single excavator. If you have a sub contractor digging for you it is the sub contractors responsibility to establish their own DigAlert ticket.
Q: Why do I have to delineate when I don't know where to dig until members have marked?
A: It is required that the excavator mark so that the utilities know where they need to mark.
Q: What days are USA closed?
A: USA is closed all major holidays including New years Day, Presidents Day, Memeorial Day, Labor Day, The 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you are not sure if USA is open simply call 811.
Q: Can I submit DigAlerts online?
A: Yes, there are several ways to submit a Digalert online. For more information please see our Web Services page.
Q: Can I update my DigAlert online?
A: You can update your ticket by signing up for a free Web Update account at our Web Services page.
Q: I signed up for a Web Update account but I cannot update my ticket?
A: Please contact technical support at 951.808.8100.
Q: Who has to call in a DigAlert?
A: Anyone doing any type of digging.
Q: a contractor, why do I have to call DigAlert when I'm working on private property?
A: It's the Law. It states in Government Code 4216.2, (2) (b) that if you are digging on private property you need to contact DigAlert, to make sure there are no subsurface installation other than the underground facility owned or operated by the owner.
Q: What do I have to do when there is a damage?
A: If it is life threatening, clear the area, call 911 and the owner of the line. If it is not life threatening call the utility owner. If you need emergency numbers you can call 811 or go to Web Services and then Emergency Contact for information.
Q: I have to contact the High Priority owner or are they required to contact me before excavating within 10ft?
A: The owner is required to contact you to schedule a meet before you excavate but if they do not and you were advised by a DigAlert Customer Service Rep that there is a priority line, please call 811 or the utility owner before any type of excavation.
Q: It's an emergency, do I have to call DigAlert?
A: Not if it is a true emergency as defind in the Government Code 4216,. (d) but if you can please do so.
Q: What do I do in an emergency after DigAlert has closed?
A: You can go to Web Services and get emergency contact information, if provided to USA. Otherwise, always hand dig with care during an emergency excavation.
